"Ali dreamily walked closer to the smooth stone, while an impression of its being clarified in her mind. Something unfamiliar shone from its ordinary dressings, from the slanted crown of moss, its white sides of dried lichen, the earth and clover rising about the rock, clinging to its face like an endless beard. It had an aura of unfathomable time . . . time reaching beyond the imagination of walking creatures, of forests, or mountains, that had itself grown into a lifeforce that stared out from this little boulder. Something deeper yet pulsed from the stillness of its being. Clouds rolled across the sky and the sun crawled away to the west while shadows lengthened.
